Meet Our Coaching Staff

Coach Pietsch has over 30 years of basketball experience as a player and coach.  Starting his playing days at La Mirada High School, Coach Pietsch moved on to play at Cerritos College, Sonoma State University, and Cal Poly Pomona. In 1996 he was hired at his alma mater as a teacher, JV boys basketball coach, and varsity assistant coach.  Three years later, he took over the Matadores program.  In 2002, he was hired at Esperanza High School and served as the head boys' basketball coach for eight years.  In 2010, Coach Pietsch transferred to Yorba Linda High School where he teachers life Science and Biology.  

Coach Yezbak has coached at both the high school and junior college level for the past 30 years. Coach Yezbak graduated from Cerritos High School where he was a three-year varsity basketball starter. He still holds many of the school's scoring records and was a two-time All San Gabriel Valley League selection  His senior season Coach Yezbak was the league's Player of the Year and an ALL CIF 1st Team Selection.

In 1984 he coach the Varisty and JV Canyon HS Men's Teams.  For the past 10 years, he has been coaching at Capistrano Valley High School.

Coach Ackland has over forty years of coaching experience.  During the 70’s and early 80’s, he coached football, basketball, and softball at his alma mater Downey High.  His 1979 Basketball team won the CIG title.  He is a member of the Downey High School Hall of Fame.  In 1983 he moved to Cerritos College where he was fortunate to coach both Coach Pietsch (1992 State Champion) and Coach Yezbak (All State 1985).

In 16 years with the men’s program, he was part of 12 Conference titles and four State Championships, three as an assistant and one as head coach.  He also assisted with the women’s program for four years and reached the state tournament three times.  Coach Ackland was inducted into the Community College Hall of Fame in 2014.  Yorba Linda Men’s Basketball players and coaches are very fortunate to be able to work with Coach A.

He lives in Yorba Linda with his wife Denise, who he credits for all his success. His oldest daughter, Amber, is a lawyer and has three children.  His second daughter, Danielle, was an All-American Softball Player at Cerritos and played for two years at Sacramento State. She is a Sixth Grade teacher in Brea.  His son, Ryan, was an All CIF pitcher at Esperanza and played for Cal State Fullerton.

Coach Hobson came from the University of La Verne where he helped coach them to their first SCIAC Conference playoff appearance in 8 seasons.  During his 13-year coaching career, he has earned a wealth of experience working at Esperanza High School, Diamond Ranch High School, the University of Riverside, and directing Chris Paul's Basketball Camp.  He has also developed the Stampede Basketball Program, as well as community-based skill development academies and camps through Full Court Basketball School.  

Coach Hobson is a native of Overland Park, Kansas and he played at Shawnee Mission South High School.  He received his bachelor's degree in 2003 and his master's degree in special education in 2017.  He currently teaches at YLHS.
